The Schooner Larinda was sunk in Halifax Harbor after being battered by an unmanned ex-Canadian Navy vessel that broke loose during hurricane Juan. All on board got off safely.

For those who wish to communicate their feelings to the Mahans and get up to the date reports a message board has been set up at Yahoo Groups. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/schoonerlarinda

Hi everyone and Happy New Year! We have found another ship and plan to be operating by May 2005. The new ship will be called "The Spirit of Larinda". She will carry the same mission and goals as Larinda always did. Giving youths the opportunities to expand their horizons, learn teamwork while developing sailing skills has been one of our goals. These will continue. I wish to thank all of you for your notes of encouragement and support. Your contributions have helped to make the Larinda dream continue. Please check out the "Hawaiian Chieftan" for a description of tThe Spirit of Larinda.We sail from San Diego,Ca. on February 1 for Cape Cod, Mass. We hope to arrive late in April or early May 2005. Thanks again, your Captain, Larry Mahan

Merry Christmas and we look forward to a Happier New Year!

As we look back on 2003 there are many good memories to recall. Early in the spring Larinda set out for the Bahamas, Jamaica and the cayman Islands. After which we headed back up the eastern seaboard. We stopped for a brief visit at Cape Cod with family and friends in order to re-supply the ship for the trip up through the Canadian Maritimes and the St. Lawrence Seaway , then on to the GreatLakes.

Larinda was once again joining with other Tall Ships in the Tall Ships 2003 Challenge. The summer was spent touring the Great Lakes.

We started the journey back home in late August and made several other stops along the way. Larinda never had the time to stop in New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island therefore, these became additional stops for us.

We had a great time in Miramichi. The welcoming committee out did themselves. It wa such a great time in both New Castle and Chatham. We had a mock cannon fight with the bounty. A lot of fun was had by everyone.

Larinda continued on her way home and we planned a stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As fate would have it , that was Larinda's last stop. I am sure most all of you know the sad story. Soon, you will find more information about this event on our web site.

Fortunately, all of our crew made it off safely, for that we are very grateful.

I wrote Larinda's Dream to let you all know my feelings. we are in the process of looking for another ship, the Larinda dream and youth sail training will go on.

Captain Larry and I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Fair winds and we will find the sunshine again!

Captain Larry & Marlene

Larinda's Dream

Why it had to happen we will never know
Larinda was so young and had so far to go.

But now that her life with larry has ended
and our hearts must be mended,
we will not let her go in vain,
the Larinda's dream will live again.

Captain Larry so brave and true,
his dream will continue, he will see it through.
He will find another ship, though it won't be the same,
he will proudly display the Larinda name.

The dream is the same and the message is true,
we will carry these thoughts to all of you.

The 3" p's and the 2"d's they will always be,
the cargo Larinda carries ever so proudly.

Do not despair please keep the dream alive,
Larinda is gone, but her spirit does survive.
We will need your support to help us through,
please hang tight, we're counting on you.

* 3"p's = Patience - Perseverance - Passion
2"d's = Drive and Determination

The message being that if you combine them
you can do anything you want to in your life.

Designed and built over a thirty year period as a modified replica of a 1767 Boston Schooner. Larinda is a unique vessel with modern safety features. yet she retains traditional wood appointments and museum quality. Much of her construction was done with recycled 100 year old hard pine. A restored 7-ton 1928 Wolverine 100HP diesel provides auxiliary power. Her 300 lb. bronze cannons add period excitement. Featured in publications worldwide, Larinda has also starred in several documentaries shown on national and local television. Awards have been won at boat shows including the 1997 Wooden Boat Show, the 1998 and the 1999 Boston Antique and Classic Boat Show.

Private Charters are welcome and Larinda is available for special events. Seaport festivals and other maritime gatherings have enjoyed her presence.
